Male to Female Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation for MTF transwomen carries many similarities with traditional breast enlargement surgery, as well as some important differences. Our plastic surgeons and helpful staff in Birmingham, AL have helped patients of all shapes and sizes see a more pleasing feminine figure.
MTF transgender patients usually undergo therapy with female hormones as part of their transition from male to female. Though some breast development is seen with feminizing hormones, it is often limited to an "A" cup breast size. Many transgender women are dissatisfied with this size and seek to further enhance their breasts with cosmetic surgery.
Breast augmentation for transgender patients employs the same surgical techniques traditionally used for biological females. At the same time, there are important differences that must be addressed to ensure the best possible results and your complete care.

Single- or Two-Stage Approach
Breast augmentation for male-to-female patients may be performed using a one- or two-stage approach depending on the individual. If your skin has the necessary degree of elasticity, only a single surgery may be needed to accommodate breast implants of the desired size and proportions. However, many genetic males, especially those with larger builds, may require a period of tissue expansion as part of a staged procedure.
The two-stage approach involves the use of tissue expanders inserted into the breast pockets and injected with sterile saline solution. Once the breast tissues have stretched and softened (which usually takes from several months to a year), a second operation is performed to replace the expanders with your breast implants.
At this follow-up surgery, Dr. Hedden removes the tissue expanders and inserts your breast implants. This is also a good time to make any adjustments in the breast pocket needed for best positioning.
Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast enlargement surgeries usually take approximately 1 hour to complete at our QUAD A accredited surgical suite in Birmingham, Alabama. Patients are given general anesthesia and closely monitored throughout their breast enhancement procedure.
An incision is made in the crease beneath the breast (inframammary fold) or elsewhere as selected by you and Dr. Hedden at your consultation. Your breast implants are then placed behind the breast tissues and carefully positioned. If you are getting saline implants, they will be filled at the time of surgery, while silicone implants are prefilled with silicone gel.
Following your outpatient breast augmentation procedure, you will be taken to our recovery area and cared for until cleared to depart. Your surgeon and the compassionate nursing staff of Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery will give you complete instructions on taking care of yourself as you look forward to your new, larger breasts with more pronounced fullness.
